Snipers Everywhere I Go
I just got back to Philly today after visiting friends and family in the great state of Indiana. I arrived at my parents quiet, sleepy farmhouse on Saturday and went to a 10-year high school reunion. I got home around 2am. It turns out that about that exact time, Zachariah Blanton was shooting at vehicles from an overpass a couple of miles away. Earlier he had opened fire a couple hours south of there from another overpass. He hit two drivers and killed one. Needless to say, this kind of thing doesn't happen too often in rural Indiana. I reassured my mom that statistics were still overwhelmingly on her side and she need not worry. Still, I have to confess that when I was loading up my new truck last night for the drive back to Philly I carefully surveyed the dark woods and cornfields that make up my parents back yard. I couldn't believe that I had given in to all the hype.
I got back to Philly without getting shot at and after a long nap I went out walking with my friend Andy in the park. We saw kids swimming in the pool at about 10:30pm and went to go check it out. We could see the security guard from a distance, so we thought it must have been some kind of special event or something. Turns out that a bunch of kids had jumped the fence and the security guard was trading verbal bullets with them and waiting for the cops to show up. Andy and I walked closer and as we neared the guard we had our backs turned to several of the kids who were up on a hill by the pool. One of them thought it would be cool to throw a glass bottle at us, nearly missing our heads.
I guess that no matter where you go, some people just like to hide in the dark and try to hurt others.
p.s. - One of my good friends coached the sniper in track, teaching him the shot put. Also, I think the reserve Sheriff's deputy who is getting credit for cracking the case gave me a ticket when I was in high school. Speaking of tickets, I am now taking donations towards payment of the $115 ticket that an Ohio trooper gave me this morning for going 74 in a 65. He was a mile across the state line where the speed limit drops from 70 to 65 as you head into Ohio. Go Buckeyes. Your tax dollars at work.
