I Did Something Silly
Every morning, my alarm goes of at 6:30am to the sound of the Michael Smerconish show's opening guitar riff. This week he had a guest who claims to have invented a cure for the hiccups. Smerconish (pictured with Freakonomics author Steven Levitt) said that anyone who could come into the studio with the hiccups would be put on air to test out the invention. You know where this is going.
I routinely eat entire jars of either olives or hot peppers. I love them both and I guess I'm compulsive or something. When I eat the peppers, I ALWAYS get the hiccups. So this past Thursday I went down to the studio at 8am and ate a jar and a half of these peppers trying to get the hiccups so that I could get on the air with my favorite talk-show host. Didn't happen. Performance anxiety, I suppose.
But it was fun. I got to see the studio and meet Smerconish and the crew. He did say my name over the air, which was kind of embarrassing actually since I couldn't deliver the goods. My real purpose in going was that I wanted to promote the marble polishing services that we offer at my job. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to get the word out to a large audience of potential customers and maybe land a couple new jobs.
I left the studio a little after 9am and went to a couple of appointments with customers. Let's just say that I had to make a couple of pit stops along the way.

Yeah, I heard you! ...first when you called in to share your pepper inducement and also the next day. Too funny. I have a blog about hiccups as an under-rated performance problem (HiccupHell.blogspot.com) and was looking forward to your demonstration of the Hic-Cup. My experience and informal experimenting with the device has been flawless. Apparently BigTalk1210 wanted their own Hic-Cup for the studio as did other Philly broadcasters as they picked up the story. Channels 3 and 6 loved it...
It's good to be silly now and then, and actually the fact that it was a free PR opp that you are capitalizing on further with a blog post negates the fool factor. Cheers!
