These People Are Nuts
ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is trying to "organize" our neighborhood. A nice guy is going around door to door inviting people to meetings. When you go to the meeting, as I did yesterday, you make plans for bigger meetings with more people. There's also some talk about safe streets, kids doing stuff, and other vague notions that no one can reject.
Skeptic that I am, I still had a great time with my neighbors and even agreed to host the next meeting. This will be, I kid you not, the meeting that preceeds the big meeting. So I guess yesterday's meeting was just a meeting to talk about meeting about a meeting. My friend Andy had the testicular fortitude to say to the guy "I WILL NOT go to another meeting." and that led to our group planning a neighborhood clean-up/social event. We'll just go around on some blocks and clean up, all the while getting to know each other better and maybe picking up a few new friends.
As for ACORN, I'm glad the guy got us together. I'm not sure what else he can offer us once we find our own voice, and my suspicion is that the ACORN agenda is simply to use our neighborhood to get votes for Democrats. That's why we gotta have so many meetings. Once they get enough people, they'll invite us to a big "rally" downtown (somehow meetings downtown get called "rallies" but they're still meetings) to support or oppose something that is part of ACORN's national agenda. I don't know about my neighbors, but if ACORN thinks I'm going to be their political Lemming, then they really are nuts.
Does anyone have more info on ACORN?
ACORNholio anyone?
