Bullets from South Africa - Sunday Night
Some bullet points:
- Listening to Tears for Fears' greatest hits CD that I borrowed from a missionary. Love that band.
- Reading "Power Lines" by Jason Carter, Jimmy's nephew, which is all about his Peace Corps time in this area of South Africa
- Spent the afternoon in Leona's shack with a few other guys today. Her place is quite the hang out for all the local Zimbabwean immigrants because she has a tv and they all live in one shack together. We watched more Nicodemus, some WWE wrestling (everyone here is a huge fan and asks me if it is "true" and if I know any of the wrestlers personally), finally we watched an early Swarzenneger movie, Commando, which features a Who's the Boss version of Alyssa Milano.
- A writer from the Philadelphia Metro (free public transit paper) emailed me about featuring our blog in the paper. That surprised me. I always loved that paper when I worked down town. Get Fuzzy is the bomb.
- Tomorrow I am helping to install a whole bunch of connectors on this hydroponic agriculture system for growing tomatoes. I'm sunburnt, by the way.
- Called my pastor, Manny, this morning before he left for church. I think being here in South Africa presents the only time when I am awake before he is. It was 1:30pm here and 7:30am there. It was nice to talk to him and I do miss our church.
- I was able to access AOL today. Gmail is still more reliable.
- Heard about Cory Lidle. Bummer.
- Had chuch here at the farm house again. It was really cool.
- Randy, who lives here at the farmhouse permantently, went to two more funerals this weekend. One of them had thousands of people there. Young guy.
- Randy told me tonight that he used to be Carlos Santana's gardener. How cool is that?
- Found a marijuana plant the other day and picked a stem to give to Philip who works for MCDC on the hydroponic project. I thought it was funny. People will now reach my blog by typing "hydroponic marijuana" into Google.
- Set a digital watch for a guy named Layton today. He's old and has AIDS and needs to be reminded every twelve hours on the dot to take his anti-retroviral meds. He's a really sweet guy who lives in a shack made of wood from an old bar. The wood says "Est. 1790". If that is true, that's pretty cool.
- Last night I went to Pretoria, about an hour from here, with a couple volunteers and two sisters who grew up here. We saw "Step Up" in a mall that is almost as nice as King of Prussia. Chris, the 16-year old sister of Nomsa, picked the movie and I think it was one of the best nights of her young life. The cost of transit alone prevents most kids from here from experiencing something like that, let alone the cost of the movie. It was a lot of fun. You could tell that Chris was trying to keep her cool, but she was loving every minute of it.
- I think that's it for now.
