A Reporter Contacted Me

She wants to do a story about Hunting Park. I gave her some contacts and the following advice:

Just do me a favor and look for good stories. I know on my blog I sometimes write about crime or whatever other ills exist here, but the general theme of my characterization of Hunting Park is positive. I believe that God loves the people of Hunting Park and is working here even amidst the chaos. I believe that our neighborhood is intrinsically good and that it reflects a loving God. Some people have a difficult time grasping this because they see things that are contrary to that notion. But I would remind them that even in the "best" neighborhoods, there are secrets behind closed doors. This place is gritty and raw, but after living here for several years I am acutely aware of a fundamental goodness and hope in the people and places of Hunting Park. I will assist you in any way that I can, but I hope you'll look for those things with your lens.

Besides all that, tales of urban blight and crime are so unoriginal and boring. You don't have to get all sunshine and flowers on me, but just look for something wonderful and I think you'll find it.

I love it when a situation forces me to communicate these things. I'm always surprised by what comes out.
